Tanushimarumachi-toyoki lies in the Tanushimaru area of Fukuoka Prefecture, now part of the city of Kurume. It sits on the Chikugo plain, one of the main farming lowlands of northern Kyushu. From above, the landscape is a fine mesh of paddy fields, irrigation channels and narrow roads, with houses clustered along older routes instead of packed into a single centre.
The Chikugo River, the largest in Kyushu, crosses the plain to the north, and a line of low mountains rises to the south. The ground between them is almost flat, so the map picks up the careful, rectilinear division of the fields, broken only by streams and the gentle curves of village lanes.
