Tarui lies in western Gifu Prefecture, where the Nōbi Plain meets the hills leading toward Sekigahara. From above, the town has a clear structure: major transport lines run east to west across it, with residential streets filling the flat land between them and wooded slopes rising to the north and south.
During the Edo period Tarui was a post town on the Nakasendō, one of the main roads linking Kyoto and Edo, and the old route still passes through the town. Tarui is also home to Nangū Taisha, a large Shinto shrine and the principal shrine of the former Mino Province, whose precinct forms a green patch at the foot of the hills.
