Thetford Mines lies in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, in rolling hill country south of Quebec City. For over a century the town was one of the world's major centres of asbestos mining, and the landscape still carries the imprint of that industry in its large open pits and pale tailings mounds.
