Torquay sits on Victoria's Surf Coast, southwest of Geelong, where the Great Ocean Road begins its route west. The town has a special place in surfing culture. Rip Curl and Quiksilver were both founded here, and Bells Beach, home of one of the sport's longest-running competitions, lies just along the coast.
From above, the coastline sets the shape. A series of beaches and low headlands curve along the shore, the foreshore reserves form a narrow green margin, and the town's streets run back from the water. The older blocks near the beach are fairly regular, while newer estates to the north and west are built in the looping crescents and cul-de-sacs of recent suburban planning.
