Varzelândia is in the north of Minas Gerais, a region of cerrado and semi-arid country where towns sit far apart and the roads between them run long and straight. On a map the town is a small, well-defined cluster of streets with a great deal of empty space around it. That emptiness is part of the picture, not something missing from it.
The streets form a mostly regular pattern of blocks around the centre, with the edges loosening as they reach the open land.
