Tonj lies in Warrap State in the northwest of South Sudan, on the river that shares its name. The land here is very flat, part of the wide plains that drain toward the Sudd wetlands. In the rainy season, the river and its side channels spread across the lowlands around the town.
From above, the town is a loose cluster of compounds and roads near the riverbank, with a market area and a few main streets forming the densest part. Beyond that, homesteads and cattle camps are scattered across the grassland, and the map quickly becomes a pattern of tracks, waterways and open space.
