Annapolis is the capital of Maryland, and its map is one of the most distinctive in the United States. The historic centre sits on a small peninsula bounded by the Severn River, Spa Creek and the Chesapeake Bay, and water frames almost every view from above.
The old town was laid out in the late seventeenth century in a baroque plan, with streets radiating from two circles: State Circle, around the Maryland State House, and Church Circle, around St. Anne's Church. The result is a rare pattern of diagonal streets converging on round hubs, quite unlike the rectangular grids of most American towns.
The United States Naval Academy occupies the waterfront along the Severn, its grounds forming a large, orderly campus beside the harbour. The Maryland State House is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use.
