Este lies on the southern edge of the Euganean Hills in the Veneto, where the volcanic hills meet the flat Po plain. On the map the town has a clear historic core around its castle, with medieval walls still tracing a large enclosure beside the centre. A canal runs through the town, and roads fan out across the level farmland to the south.
Este has long been an important settlement. The ancient Veneti culture here is called Atestine after the town's Latin name, and the National Atestine Museum holds finds from that period. The town also gave its name to the House of Este, the family that later ruled Ferrara and Modena.
