Imizu lies on the shore of Toyama Bay, on the Sea of Japan coast, in the middle of Toyama Prefecture. On a map the coastline forms a smooth curve along the north, and the port area of Shinminato cuts into it with docks and channels. Inland, the city spreads across flat ground divided by rivers into residential districts and rice fields.
Shinminato is the historic port town. The Uchikawa, a narrow canal lined with fishermen's houses and crossed by many small bridges, runs through it. The tall Shinminato Ohashi bridge spans the harbour entrance, and the sail training ship Kaiwo Maru is moored nearby. On clear days the Tateyama mountains appear across the bay.
