Saint-Germain-en-Laye lies west of Paris on a plateau overlooking a loop of the Seine. From above, its layout is defined by three elements: the old town with its dense network of streets, the royal château at its edge, and the large Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye that stretches north and west, enclosed within a bend of the river.
The château was a royal residence for centuries and is the birthplace of Louis XIV. André Le Nôtre designed the Grande Terrasse, a straight promenade of more than two kilometres along the edge of the plateau, with views toward Paris. The château now houses the National Archaeology Museum, and the composer Claude Debussy was born in the town.
