Sobradinho lies in northern Bahia on the São Francisco River, next to the Sobradinho Dam. The reservoir behind the dam is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world by surface area, stretching far upstream across the semi-arid sertão. On a map, this huge body of water dominates, and the town appears as a small, orderly grid beside it.
The town grew with the construction of the dam in the 1970s, and its layout reflects that planned origin, with regular streets and clearly defined districts. Downstream, the river narrows again and continues toward Juazeiro and Petrolina. The dam wall, spillway and hydroelectric works form a distinctive set of shapes between lake and river.
