Vettavalam is a town in the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, in the interior of the state, west of the coast at Puducherry. On a map it appears as a dense core of streets near low, rocky hills, surrounded by flat agricultural land. The pattern of small fields and irrigation channels is typical of this part of southern India.
A defining feature of the landscape around Vettavalam, as across much of Tamil Nadu, is its tanks, the reservoirs built to store monsoon rain for irrigation.
