The compact old town sits on one side, its streets following the outline of the former town walls, and beyond it the slopes are covered with fields and orchards.
The town is known in Germany for its cherries. The surrounding slopes are among the country's largest cherry-growing areas, and blossom and harvest are a big part of the local calendar. Witzenhausen is also home to the University of Kassel's faculty of organic agricultural sciences, an unusual academic presence for a small town.
