Xique-Xique sits on the São Francisco River in the interior of Bahia, where the river is broad and dotted with islands and sandbanks. On the map, the water forms a long, powerful edge along the town. The streets spread back from the riverfront in a loose grid, and the semi-arid sertão begins almost at the edge of town.
The town takes its name from the xique-xique, a spiny cactus common in the dry northeastern backlands. The contrast is stark: a great river, which supports fishing and irrigated farming, runs past land shaped by drought-adapted vegetation. That meeting of water and dry country explains both the town's location and the character of its map.
