Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is built on an island just off the mainland coast of the Gulf, and its central district has one of the most regular street plans in the region. Wide avenues divide the island into a grid of large superblocks, each filled with smaller streets and towers, while a long corniche runs along the northwestern shore.
Around the main island, the map is full of water. Narrow channels separate it from the mainland, the Eastern Mangroves form a soft green fringe on the eastern side, and a ring of other islands, including Al Maryah, Al Reem, Saadiyat and Yas, has been developed with new districts, bridges and coastal roads, each shape clearly defined against the sea.
Saadiyat Island is home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, whose wide dome sits over the water, while the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands near the bridges that link the island to the mainland.
