Seen from above, Ascot is shaped by one large feature: the racecourse, a long curved track that lies across the northern edge of the town. The High Street runs close to its southern flank, and the rest of the settlement spreads out in loose clusters rather than a tight grid. Large plots, curving private roads and wide gaps between houses give the map an open, spacious texture.
The racecourse was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, and Royal Ascot, held each June, remains one of the best-known meetings on the British racing calendar. Around the town, the map is broken up by heath and pine woodland. Swinley Forest lies to the south-west, and the edge of Windsor Great Park stretches off towards the north-east.

Much of the land around the town is heath and woodland rather than streets. On the poster these areas read as calm open space between scattered lanes and cul-de-sacs.

To the north-east, the roads thin out towards Windsor Great Park. The settled area gives way to long straight drives and wide open parkland.
