Basel is built where the Rhine turns sharply north, leaving the Alps behind on its way to the North Sea. The river divides the city into Grossbasel on the higher southern bank and Kleinbasel on the flatter northern side, and on a map this bend is the defining gesture: a broad curve of water with the old town gathered above it.
Grossbasel climbs to the red sandstone Münster on its terrace above the river, surrounded by lanes and squares that have kept their medieval pattern. Several bridges cross the Rhine, including the Mittlere Brücke at one of the oldest crossing points, while small cable ferries move between the banks using only the current. In summer, swimmers float downstream past the old town.
Basel is also where three countries meet, with the Dreiländereck marker standing in the Rhine harbour, and the University of Basel, founded in 1460, is the oldest in Switzerland.
