Bawean lies in the Java Sea, well north of the East Java coast, and belongs to Gresik Regency. It is roughly round, with a hilly, forested interior of old volcanic origin. From above, most of its settlements sit around the edge, where the land meets the sea. A road loops around the island near the coast, linking one village to the next.
The island is home to the Bawean deer, a species found nowhere else. Bawean is also known for its long tradition of migration. For generations, many of its people have travelled to work in Singapore and Malaysia, and communities of Baweanese descent, known in Singapore as Boyanese, remain there today. The main settlement is Sangkapura, on the south side of the island.
