Bucharest spreads across the flat Wallachian plain with no hills or coast to steer it, so its shape comes from water and planning. The Dâmbovița crosses the centre in a straightened, walled channel, while to the north the Colentina River forms a string of lakes, including Herăstrău and Floreasca, laid like beads across the residential districts.
The street map records several eras. Calea Victoriei, the old ceremonial route, runs north from the river with a gentle irregularity. Șoseaua Kiseleff heads straight past the Arcul de Triumf toward the parks. South of the river, the Civic Centre of the 1980s cut a wide axis, Bulevardul Unirii, leading to the Palace of the Parliament, one of the largest administrative buildings in the world.
The old nickname Little Paris came from the boulevards, villas and cafes of the decades before the Second World War, and much of that fabric survives between later apartment blocks. A row of lakes follows the Colentina River across the north of the city, bordered by large parks, and reads on paper as a series of pale shapes linked end to end.

The river was straightened and embanked, so it crosses the city as a narrow, even ribbon rather than a winding stream, dividing the centre into northern and southern halves.
