Formigine lies just south of Modena, on the flat, fertile plain of Emilia-Romagna where it begins to tilt toward the Apennine foothills. The town is centred on its medieval castle, and the old streets gather around it in a small, tight cluster. From there, roads fan out to Modena, Sassuolo and the surrounding villages that belong to the municipality.
The area is part of the Italian ceramic tile district that extends through Sassuolo and Fiorano Modenese, and the map reflects that economy. Residential neighbourhoods alternate with industrial zones of large rectangular buildings, while farmland fills the gaps between settlements.
