Gioia del Colle stands on the Murge plateau in the province of Bari, in the heel of Italy, where the land rises away from the Adriatic coast. The colle in its name means hill. The map shows a town that grew outward from a dense historic core into ordered modern blocks, and then into olive groves, pastures and vineyards.
At the heart of the old town stands the Norman-Swabian castle, restored in the era of Frederick II, and its square plan is easy to pick out among the narrow lanes. Gioia is also known for Primitivo wine, which carries its own Gioia del Colle designation, and for fresh mozzarella from local dairies. The ancient remains of Monte Sannace lie nearby.
