Iserlohn lies on the northern edge of the Sauerland, where the Ruhr valley meets wooded hills. On the map, the old town sits on rising ground, with a compact ring of streets around its churches, while newer districts spread into valleys and along ridges. Large areas of forest surround the town and break up the built-up area.
Iserlohn was historically an industrial town, known for metalworking, wire and needle making, and later for its hill-country setting. The Seilersee, a small lake on the edge of town, and the Danzturm, a lookout tower on the wooded heights, are local landmarks, and the Dechenhöhle cave lies nearby. The town is also known for its ice hockey club, the Iserlohn Roosters.
