Keszthely sits where Lake Balaton narrows to its western end, and from above the lake fills one whole side of the map. The shoreline is broken by piers, reed beds and a promenade. Behind it the town climbs gently inland, with a compact centre, a main street running north toward the palace grounds, and newer housing spreading out over the low hills.
The largest shape in the town is the Festetics Palace and its formal park, a broad block of green set against the smaller streets of the old centre. The Festetics family also founded the Georgikon here in 1797, one of the earliest agricultural colleges in Europe. That link to learning and estate farming still shows in the town's layout, where large institutional grounds sit between residential streets.
