Kokopo is the capital of East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea, located on the Gazelle Peninsula at the northeastern end of New Britain island. The town stretches along the southern shore of Blanche Bay, with roads following the coastline and residential areas climbing gently into the hills behind. From above, the shoreline is the defining line of the map.
Kokopo became the provincial capital after the 1994 eruptions of the Tavurvur and Vulcan volcanoes buried much of nearby Rabaul in ash. Government offices, businesses and many residents moved here, and the town has grown steadily since. To the north, the flooded Rabaul caldera forms the sheltered harbour that gives the bay its distinctive shape.
