Lakeville lies in Dakota County at the southern edge of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area. Water and curves dominate its map. The highway splits into its I-35E and I-35W branches just north of the city. Within Lakeville it cuts a clean north–south line, the strongest straight element on the map.
