Łomża stands on the high left bank of the Narew in northeastern Poland. It is one of the historic towns of the Masovia and Podlasie borderland. From above, the old town is a compact cluster of streets around the market square, set on the edge of an escarpment. Below, the Narew valley opens out as wide, flat meadows crossed by the river's winding course.
The town was an important regional centre for centuries. Its Gothic co-cathedral is one of the landmarks of the old quarter, and the local brewery has made the name Łomża familiar across Poland. On the map, the historic core shows as a tight weave of short streets. Newer districts spread inland in larger blocks, and main roads lead out toward Warsaw, Białystok and the north.
