Monfalcone sits near the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea, between Trieste and the mouth of the Isonzo River. Behind the town the land rises onto the limestone Karst plateau. To the south and west it opens onto flat coastal plain, canals and marshland. The map divides clearly into hill, town and water.
The historic centre is compact, a small grid of streets and squares, and newer districts extend toward the port and the industrial areas. The most striking feature is the shipyard, one of the largest in Europe and the place where many of the world's big cruise ships are built. Its long docks and slipways cut hard geometric shapes into the shoreline.
Above the town, the Rocca di Monfalcone, a fortress of medieval origin, looks out from the edge of the Karst. A Monfalcone map poster shows the contrast between that rough upland and the regular lines of the port and shipyard below, with the Adriatic filling the lower part of the frame.

The limestone plateau rises directly behind the town, and the street pattern stops where the slope begins. This gives the map a firm northern boundary.

West of town, canals and low coastal land lead toward the mouth of the Isonzo. The watercourses add a pattern of lines to the flat plain.
