Oldham sits on high ground at the edge of the Pennines, and its map reflects that climb. The town centre occupies a ridge, and terraced streets spread down the slopes in tight parallel rows. To the east the pattern thins out into hill farms, villages and open moor. Main roads radiate from the centre toward Manchester, Rochdale and across the hills into Yorkshire.
In the nineteenth century Oldham became one of the great cotton-spinning towns of the world. Many of its large mills still stand, and their rectangular footprints are visible among the houses. Today the Metrolink tram runs through the town centre, Alexandra Park adds a large green space near the centre, and the borough reaches out to the moorland reservoirs of Saddleworth.
