Pweto lies in Haut-Katanga province, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at the northern end of Lake Mweru. The lake forms part of the border with Zambia, and near Pweto the Luvua river leaves it, flowing north-west as one of the headwaters of the wider Congo river system.
On a map, water shapes everything. The lake occupies a large open area to the south, its shoreline curving toward the town, while the Luvua forms a clear line heading away from it. The town itself appears as a relatively modest cluster of streets and tracks set on the land near this outflow.
