Shadwell lies on the north bank of the Thames in Tower Hamlets, between Wapping and Limehouse. From above, it has a layered East End structure. The Highway and Commercial Road run east–west as strong lines, Cable Street runs between them, and a close network of terraces, estates and backstreets fills the rest. To the south, the river and the remains of the docks open the map up.
Shadwell Basin, a surviving part of the old London Docks, is now a still, rectangular body of water surrounded by housing and used for water sports. Nearby, King Edward Memorial Park looks directly onto the Thames, and the entrance to the Rotherhithe Tunnel passes under the river close by. The church of St George in the East, one of Hawksmoor's London churches, stands just to the west.
A Shadwell map poster draws on centuries of maritime London. Right-angled dock edges sit beside the soft curve of the river, and working streets sit beside modern waterside flats. The DLR and Overground lines cross the district on raised and sunken routes, adding long, straight strokes to an already detailed composition.

The Highway corridor
The Highway runs straight across the south of the district, parallel to the river. Its strong line divides the waterside from the denser streets to the north.
Riverside park
King Edward Memorial Park opens onto the Thames and forms one of the few open green spaces on this part of the riverbank. Views reach toward Rotherhithe and the bend of the river.
