West Milford covers a large piece of northern New Jersey's Highlands, and from above it looks more like a woodland than a town. Ridges run from southwest to northeast, and water fills the valleys between them. The roads bend around shorelines and hillsides. Neighbourhoods form small loose clusters along the roads and never join into one continuous grid.
Water is the main feature on the map. Greenwood Lake runs north across the border into New York, and reservoirs sit in the southern and eastern parts of the township. The Appalachian Trail crosses the township's northern ridges, and much of the land lies inside state forests and parks. Because of this, large parts of the map stay almost empty. Parallel ridges run diagonally through the township and set the direction of almost every road. The map shows this as a steady grain from southwest to northeast.

Several reservoirs fill the valleys and supply water to communities further south. On paper they look like dark, branching shapes, and the lanes around them bend to follow their edges.
