Wijk bij Duurstede lies in the southeast of Utrecht province, where the Kromme Rijn branches off from the Nederrijn and Lek. From above, the old town is a compact, almost rectangular grid of streets around a central market square and church. The river dike borders it on one side and the green grounds of Duurstede Castle on another.
The town stands close to the site of Dorestad, one of the most important trading centres of early medieval northwestern Europe, which declined after the rivers shifted and Viking raids took their toll. Duurstede Castle later served as a residence of the bishops of Utrecht. The town's round stone windmill, Rijn en Lek, recalls Jacob van Ruisdael's famous painting of a mill at Wijk bij Duurstede.

Duurstede Castle stands in a landscaped park with moats, a green, irregular shape at the edge of the otherwise regular old town.
