Fortanga River
The river flows north out of the foothills along the town, and its winding course with a green strip on either side contrasts with the straight streets.

La mappa
Achkhoy-Martan Map Poster & Print
Achkhoy-Martan lies in western Chechnya, southwest of Grozny, where the plain meets the first foothills of the Caucasus. The town is the centre of its district and is laid out along the Fortanga River, which flows north from the mountains. Streets run in long parallel lines roughly with the river, and cross streets link them at regular intervals.
From above, the plan is unusually orderly for a town of its size. Houses sit on long narrow plots with gardens, which spreads the town over a wide area and gives the map a fine, even texture. To the south the land rises toward wooded ridges, while to the north it opens into fields and roads leading to neighbouring settlements.
An Achkhoy-Martan map poster brings out that stretched, regular pattern and the curving line of the river beside it. Built on the edge of two landscapes, the town reads clearly in monochrome, with its orderly street grid set against the looser shapes of the foothills to the south.

Long parallel streets
The town is organised into long, straight streets with deep garden plots, which gives the map an even, lined pattern across a wide area.
Foothills to the south
South of the town the terrain rises into wooded ridges, where roads become fewer and curve with the ground.
