Gudauri stands high on the southern side of the Greater Caucasus, beside the Georgian Military Road that crosses the mountains towards Kazbegi and the Russian border. On a map the resort sits on a broad, sunny shelf. Its hotels and residences are grouped close to the road, and wide treeless slopes rise above. The land around it is open and steep, with deep valleys cut below.
The Georgian Military Road is the organising line. It winds up through the area in long switchbacks, and Gudauri grew around it. Nearby, a large monument with a mosaic panorama looks out over a dramatic gorge and is a popular stop for travellers on the road. The resort is known for reliable snow and for off-piste and heli-skiing in the surrounding mountains.
