Riverside grid
The town's streets form a short, compact grid on the riverbank. On the poster it reads as a small, crisp pattern surrounded by the looser shapes of water and forest.

La mappa
Alvarães Map Poster & Print
Alvarães is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, in the middle Solimões region near the city of Tefé. It is a town reached mainly by water, and the map shows that clearly. A small grid of streets sits on higher ground at the water's edge, while wide channels, lakes and seasonally flooded forest take up most of the surrounding land.
The municipality lies within the wider area of the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, one of the best-known protected areas of flooded forest in Brazil. Water levels in this part of the Amazon rise and fall by several metres each year, so the outline of channels and lakes around the town changes with the seasons.
A Alvarães map poster is mostly about water and forest, with the town as a small, precise mark within it. In black and white, the pale channels and the dark land produce an almost abstract image, well suited to the Noir or Blueprint styles.

Channels and lakes
The Solimões system splits into channels, lakes and backwaters around the town. Their branching forms dominate the map and give it a strong, organic quality.
Flooded forest
Várzea, the forest that floods every year, covers much of the surrounding land. On the map it forms broad unbroken areas that set off the fine detail of the river.
