Madeira River
The broad river runs along the western side of the city. Its width dwarfs the streets beside it and gives the map a bold mass of water that anchors every style.

La mappa
Porto Velho Map Poster & Print
Porto Velho, the capital of Rondônia, stands on the eastern bank of the Madeira River, one of the major tributaries of the Amazon. The plan of the city is simple and easy to read. A grid of streets spreads inland from the waterfront, and the river forms a hard western edge. Beyond the urban area, the street network quickly thins into roads leading through farmland and forest.
The city grew up around the construction of the Madeira-Mamoré Railway in the early twentieth century. This notoriously difficult project was built to carry rubber past the rapids of the Madeira. The old railway yard near the river is still one of the best-known places in town. Upstream, the Santo Antônio hydroelectric dam now spans the river.
A Porto Velho map poster is defined by the contrast between the orderly grid and the sweeping curve of the Madeira. The river takes up a large part of the frame. This gives the design a strong, simple structure that reads well on a wall from a distance, even at the smaller print sizes.

Railway heritage
The historic yard of the Madeira-Mamoré Railway sits near the waterfront, a reminder that the city was founded around the line and its difficult construction.
Inland grid
Streets run in a fairly regular pattern away from the river and loosen into larger blocks and longer avenues toward the outskirts.
