Annaba lies in northeastern Algeria, near the Tunisian border, on a broad bay of the Mediterranean. The city spreads between the sea and the wooded slopes of the Edough massif, which rises to the west, while the Seybouse River reaches the coast to the south. On a map this gives Annaba a clear frame of water, mountain and plain.
In antiquity the site was Hippo Regius, a Roman city where Saint Augustine served as bishop in the late fourth and early fifth centuries. The excavated ruins lie on the southern side of the modern city, and above them the Basilica of Saint Augustine, completed in the early twentieth century, stands on a hill overlooking the bay.
The modern centre is organised around the Cours de la Révolution, a broad tree-lined boulevard leading towards the port, with an older quarter close by.
