Artux Map Poster & Print
Artux is the seat of the Kizilsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture in western Xinjiang, just north of Kashgar at the edge of the Tarim Basin. Behind it rise the bare foothills of the Tian Shan. On the map the green oasis appears as an island of streets, orchards and irrigation channels surrounded by arid land.
The area has a long place in Central Asian history. Near the city stands the mausoleum of Satuq Bughra Khan, the Kara-Khanid ruler remembered as the first Turkic khan to convert to Islam, in the tenth century. Artux is also known for its figs, which are grown in the surrounding villages and sold across the region.
The modern town follows a straightforward plan of broad avenues and rectangular blocks, while the older villages around it keep a looser pattern of lanes that follow the water channels.
