Biga lies inland on the peninsula that carries its name, in the northeastern part of Çanakkale province. Seen from above, the town is a compact centre surrounded by a looser ring of newer blocks. Beyond them, a broad agricultural plain stretches north toward the Sea of Marmara. The ground is mostly level, so the streets spread out evenly and there are no steep slopes to bend them.
The river running past the town is widely identified with the ancient Granicus, where Alexander the Great won his first major battle against the Persian army in 334 BC. On the map today it is a modest channel curving through fields. It cuts a gentle line across the otherwise orderly layout of roads and parcels.
