Brusque lies in the valley of the Itajaí-Mirim river in Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. It was founded in 1860 by European settlers, mainly German, and it became a centre of the textile industry. On a map, the river winds through the middle of town. The main streets follow the valley floor on both banks.
Hills rise steeply on either side, and they limit the town's shape. Neighbourhoods reach up the side valleys in long fingers, and the ridges between them stay mostly wooded. Bridges cross the river at regular intervals, linking the two halves of the centre.
