Casper lies in central Wyoming on the North Platte River, the state's second-largest city. From above, the downtown is a grid of streets on the river's south bank, with newer neighbourhoods spreading east and west along the valley. To the south, the land rises toward Casper Mountain, and the outer streets start to follow the slopes.
The site was a crossing point for the Oregon, Mormon and California trails, and a military post, now reconstructed as Fort Caspar, guarded the river crossing. Later the city grew with the oil industry. In 2017 it was one of the best-known places to watch the total solar eclipse.
