Çat lies high on the eastern Anatolian plateau, south of Erzurum, in a landscape of wide valleys and rounded uplands. From above, the town reads as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by broad expanses of open land, with few features to interrupt the space around it.
The street pattern is modest and practical: a main road through the centre, a handful of connecting streets, and blocks that thin out toward the fields. Roads run out across the plateau toward neighbouring villages and the provincial centre.
