Chita lies on the western side of the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, facing Ise Bay just south of Nagoya. The map divides into two clear bands. Along the coast, reclaimed land is laid out in large rectangular blocks for power stations, refineries and factories. Inland lies a softer zone of residential streets, farmland and low wooded hills, with channels separating the reclaimed land from the older shore.
The city took its present form in the second half of the twentieth century, as the industrial belt around Nagoya expanded along the bay. Rail lines run north and south along the peninsula, and the stations form small centres surrounded by dense housing. Further inland, ponds and patches of green break up the street pattern, a common feature of the peninsula's gentle terrain.
A Chita map poster captures the contrast between an industrial waterfront drawn in bold straight lines and the more irregular fabric of the neighbourhoods behind it. The historic Okada district, with its older merchant houses, adds a small area of finer grain. In black and white, the edge of Ise Bay becomes a striking graphic line across the sheet.
