Coatepec lies just south of Xalapa, on the humid eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The historic centre follows a regular colonial grid of blocks around a central plaza and church. On a map, that neat centre contrasts with what surrounds it: winding roads, small streams and steep ravines that follow the shape of the mountainside.
The town is best known for its coffee. The shaded plantations around it made Coatepec one of Mexico's traditional coffee centres, and it is officially recognised as a Pueblo Mágico. The mild, misty climate also supports orchids and dense cloud-forest vegetation, which on a map appears as large quiet areas between the lines of roads and settlements.
