Curtea de Argeş lies on the Argeș River in southern Romania, at the point where the Wallachian plain meets the foothills of the Făgăraș Mountains. On a map the river runs along the eastern side of the town, the streets climb gently to the west, and the valley narrows to the north toward the high Carpathians.
The town was one of the early capitals of Wallachia, and its Princely Church dates from the fourteenth century. The richly decorated Curtea de Argeș Cathedral, the subject of the legend of Master Manole, is the burial place of several Romanian kings and queens. The road north through the valley leads toward the Transfăgărășan.
