Euphrates channels
The river divides around islands as it passes the city. Its branching channels form the strongest natural lines on the poster and set the direction of the whole urban plan.

La mappa
Deir ez-Zor Map Poster & Print
Deir ez-Zor is defined by the Euphrates. The city lies along the river's right bank in eastern Syria, and from above the water, its channels and islands form the most prominent feature. The built-up area follows the river in a long band. Irrigated land lines the banks, and the dry steppe begins abruptly on either side.
The city is the capital of its governorate and has long been the main centre of Syria's middle Euphrates region. Its best-known landmark was a pedestrian suspension bridge across the river, built in the 1920s. The bridge was destroyed in 2013 during the war, but it remains closely linked with the city's identity.
The streets closest to the river are dense and irregular, while more planned districts extend away from the water. On a Deir ez-Zor map poster, the contrast between the winding river with its green fringe and the geometric street pattern gives the composition its structure. It shows a desert city that exists because of a river.

River-fringe farmland
A narrow belt of cultivated land follows the banks. It stands as a band of fine texture between the city streets and the open steppe beyond.
Riverside core
The oldest, densest streets lie close to the water, and newer, more regular districts extend inland from there, recording how the city spread away from the river.
