Şanlıurfa sits on the edge of the Harran plain in southeastern Turkey, and from above the city shows two very different textures. The old core is a dense knot of narrow, bending lanes and courtyard houses crowded below a rocky citadel hill. Around it, newer districts spread out in broader blocks and long avenues that run toward the flat farmland beyond.
At the foot of the citadel lie Balıklıgöl, the pools of sacred carp, set in gardens and framed by mosques. Local tradition links the spot to the prophet Abraham, and the water draws pilgrims and visitors throughout the year. On a map the pools read as two small, clean shapes of calm inside the tight grain of the bazaar quarter and the lanes around it.
A short drive northeast of the city is Göbekli Tepe, the prehistoric hilltop sanctuary whose carved stone pillars changed how archaeologists think about the beginnings of settled life.
