Domingos Martins lies in the mountains west of Vitória, reached by the BR-262 as it climbs away from the coast into the highlands of Espírito Santo. The town grew from a colony founded in the 1840s by German-speaking immigrants, among them many Pomeranians, and that heritage still shows in its architecture, its food and the family names of the region.
The municipality is named after Domingos José Martins, a native of Espírito Santo who took part in the Pernambucan revolution of 1817. Its best-known landmark is Pedra Azul, a great granite dome protected in a state park, whose bare rock faces change colour through the day and are visible from far along the highway.
