Dronten stands on land that was seabed until the 1950s, when Eastern Flevoland was drained from the former Zuiderzee. The town was founded in the early 1960s as part of that project. From above it looks exactly like what it is: a planned town surrounded by long, straight canals, dikes and fields laid out with a ruler.
The municipality includes the villages of Biddinghuizen and Swifterbant as well as Dronten itself, all linked by straight roads across the polder. The map is remarkably geometric. Rectangular farm plots, drainage ditches at right angles and tree lines along the roads surround the towns, which sit as compact clusters of streets at planned distances from each other.
At the centre of Dronten stands De Meerpaal, a 1960s cultural centre known for its open, glass-walled design. A Dronten map poster captures how clear this landscape is. Almost every line was drawn by planners and engineers, and the surrounding dikes still mark where the old sea used to be.
