Duncan is the seat of Stephens County in southern Oklahoma, and from above it looks like a classic plains town. A regular grid of streets is laid out across open, gently rolling land. A compact downtown sits near the centre, and the residential blocks spread outward until they meet section-line roads and farmland.
U.S. Route 81 runs north to south through the city and broadly follows the Chisholm Trail, the route used in the nineteenth century to drive cattle from Texas to Kansas. The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan tells that story. The town also has a place in industrial history as the early home of the Halliburton oilfield services company.
Several reservoirs lie around the edges of town and add irregular shapes of water to an otherwise straight-lined plan. A Duncan map poster works because of that contrast.
